The old Volkswagen headed south-west along the Hume Highway, that early stretch of road notorious for a series of hideous crimes that had occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The highway had been the hunting ground for backpacker killer Ivan Milat, who picked up hitchhikers, including two young British dark-haired women, and raped and murdered them in a forest. The Volkswagen carrying Joanne and Peter roared past the forest road, the Milat crimes far from their minds.

They travelled to Canberra, a trip that took two days and a city Joanne found ‘quite boring’, before travelling on to Victoria and South Australia. They often stayed in caravan parks where they chatted with other travellers, before turning the Volkswagen north, where their real outback adventure would begin. They stopped off in the desert town of Coober Pedy and Joanne wrote a postcard to her family in Huddersfield.
